Qaitbay Citadel

The founder of the Citadel of Qaitbay is Sultan Al Ashraf  Saif El Din Qaitbay in 1480 AD . Sultan Qaitbay was mamluke and when he visited the site of old lighthouse (Manara) in Alexandria , he ordered the fortress to be built on lighthouse foundations .

Citadel of Qaitbay is considered one of the most important defensive strongholds. The Citadel consists of 3 main parts, the huge walls that surround the entire complex, an inner wall and the main tower which was built actually on the site of the Lighthouse .

Throughout the Mameluke period, and due to its strategic location, the Citadel was well maintained by all the rulers who came after Qaitbay .
in 1952 After the revolution, the Egyptian Naval troops turned the building to a maritime museum .
