Amoud el-Sawari




Amoud el-Sawari or( Pompey's Pillar) is one of the most famous monuments in Alexandria , and was the highest memorial in the world . Pompey's Pillar has been constructed in Roman age , it was dedicated to the Roman emperor Diocletian (284 - 305)AD .
the Pillar is made of red granite which came from Aswan . height 
of 27 meters, with base diameter 2.70 meters, and the top, 2.30 meters .

the upper part of the base has an inscription in Greek which says:(To the most just emperor, tutelary of Alexandria, Diocletian, the invincible. Posthumous the prefect of Egypt ) , and we can see Sphinx down below the Pompey's Pillar and that make it more beautiful .
the name ( Amoud el-Sawari = Column masts ) were because the column was the heighest one among 400 column , and it looked like masts of ships , and the name ( Pompey's Pillar ) because of erroneously dated to the time of Pompey the Roman commander .
Europeans thought head of Pompey -who escaped to Egypt- was laid above the crown of the column
